Section II football quarterfinals: A look back

I did well with my Section II football quarterfinal predictions. I only got one game completely wrong, as you will see with this recap:

Class AA

Prediction: Guilderland 27, Columbia 21

Actual: Columbia 40, Guilderland 19

I really didn't see this one coming, and I don't think Guilderland did either. The Dutchmen looked good early on as they built a 12-0 lead, but then Christopher Smith broke through with a 66-yard touchdown run for Columbia and he didn't stop until he amassed 285 yards and three TDs. Oh well.

Prediction: Christian Brothers Academy 35, Schenectady 14

Actual: CBA 40, Schenectady 0

No surprise here. The Brothers were too stacked for Schenectady to handle. Now, let's see how Columbia handles CBA's dynamic offense. Or perhaps, we should see how CBA's defense handles Chris Smith.

Prediction: Shenendehowa 42, Shaker 7

Actual: Shen 35, Shaker 7

In dart terms, I hit the outer ring of the bull's eye on that prediction. Not quite dead on, but good enough to earn some applause. Next.

Prediction: LaSalle 49, Ballston Spa 42

Actual: LaSalle 42, Ballston Spa 37

Another close approximation on my part. But if LaSalle has any hope of beating Shen in the semifinals, it's going to need to shore up its defense. I hear the New York Jets have a bye from the NFL this weekend. OK, that's a little too unrealistic.

Class A

Prediction: Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake 20, Mohonasen 14

Actual: BH-BL 47, Mohonasen 6

Not quite the performance I expected from Mohonasen, which gave up 41 points in the first half. But give credit to BH-BL for playing a nearly flawless first half.

Prediction: Troy 36, Glens Falls 0

Actual: Troy 34, Glens Falls 0

TWO POINTS OFF?! Darn it, Troy! All I needed was one two-point conversion or a safety for a perfect call! Still, it was almost exactly what I expected to happen.

Prediction: Queensbury 26, Bishop Maginn 14

Actual: Queensbury 33, Bishop Maginn 15

Nic Ketter's night for Queensbury: three touchdowns, three interceptions. Yup, the kid is a beast.

Prediction: Amsterdam 35, Lansingburgh 14

Actual: Amsterdam 54, Lansingburgh 12

I wasn't quite sure if Amsterdam was going to eclipse the 40-point plateau against what I thought was a decent Lansingburgh defense, but I knew the Rugged Rams weren't going to allow the Knights to score a lot of points. Now, they get to deal with Ketter for the second time this season in this weekend's semifinals.

Class B

Prediction: Schalmont 42, Hudson 7

Actual: Schalmont 47, Hudson 0

The Sabres are really good. Enough said.

Prediction: Ravena 27, Schuylerville 21

Actual: Ravena 17, Schuylerville 14

The game was even closer than I anticipated. It took a 25-yard field goal by Harland Hoose midway through the fourth quarter and some stingy late-game defense by the Indians to prevail. Their reward: A trip to western Rotterdam to face Schalmont Friday.

Prediction: Cobleskill 20, Cohoes 12

Actual: Cobleskill 52, Cohoes 14

I said in my prediction that it wouldn't be pretty, and it wasn't. At least, it wasn't for Cohoes.

Prediction: Albany Academy 28, Hudson Falls 13

Actual: Academy 27, Hudson Falls 6

That sound you just heard was my dart hitting the outer ring of the bull's eye for the sixth time in 12 throws. And if you ever saw me play darts, you'd know that I'm not usually good enough to do that in 100 throws.

Final record through quarterfinal round: 11-1. I only messed up with taking Guilderland over Columbia.

With all of that said, I'm going to take a few days to formulate my semifinal round predictions. We'll see how close I come to the bull's eye this time.
